Dear all,

I have followed the instructions of redhat of how to upgrade a kernel
downloading from the upgrades.redhat.com web page the corresponding
RPMs.

I have downloaded the following RPMs for my fresh installation:

 kernel-2.4.18-24.7.x.i686.rpm
 kernel-source-2.4.18-24.7.x.i686.rpm
kernel-smp-2.4.18-24.7.x.i686.rpm (since its a double proccesor box)

I did the upgrade of the kernel-source RPM and had to use -ivh --nodeps
--force options to install the kernel and the kernel-smp RPMs.

I noticed that the kernel progress bar only reached the 50%.

Everything seems to be fine, but what could be wrong or everything is
fine?

 Many thanks in advance

 Miguel

... you might consider getting the source from 'kernel.org'

Generally speaking I only install one of the above. As the system is SMP,
that's the one I'd choose. So far, I've never had:

rpm -ivh kernel-smp-2.4.18-24.7.x.i686.rpm

fail. Haven't had to to use --nodeps or --force to install a kernel.
RPM based kernel installs happily live next to each other. I've had up to
five.

Never done a "upgrade" to kernel-source rpm. Again I've always just done
rpm -ivh

You've run out of disk? The rpm database is corrupt? You're on a slow
processor and it just takes awhile? I assumbe by "kernel progress bar"
you actually mean the rpm install progress indicator. You get that by
providing "-v" as an arguement to rpm.

Many thanks to all for your answers.

Answering Terry White about installing a kernel from kernel.org, I am
installing a Dell Server, and their support suggest to install the redhat
kernels, not the regular ones from kernel.org because this kernel fix and adds
stuff that are not in the regular kernel. I suppose that these kernels have
patches added in it. I dont know if it is true or not, but I need to update
the box pretty quickly and I´d rather prefer to follow the instructions of the
provider (suppose they have tried what they say first).

 Keith:

Yes, you were right, you understood my bad English. I was talking about the
progress indicator of RPM.

I checked the rpm db and all the kernels are in it, and the progress
indicator of the installation of the kernel reached the 50 %, but it was
followed by the kernel-smp, which really reached the 100 %. It got close to
fill up the partition, but Its not full.

I take note of your suggestions about forcing the kernel, maybe I did
something wrong.

I will try to reboot the box and see what happens.

 Many thanks

 Miguel

Dear Miguel Gonz?lez Casta?os,

Once you wrote about "Updating the kernel of a RedHat 7.3":
MGlCo> I have followed the instructions of redhat of how to upgrade a kernel
MGlCo> downloading from the upgrades.redhat.com web page the corresponding
MGlCo> RPMs.

It looks like you haven't followed all instructions...

MGlCo> I have downloaded the following RPMs for my fresh installation:
MGlCo> kernel-2.4.18-24.7.x.i686.rpm
MGlCo> kernel-source-2.4.18-24.7.x.i686.rpm
MGlCo> kernel-smp-2.4.18-24.7.x.i686.rpm (since its a double proccesor box)

Sometimes you need a little more then that, like modutils, for example.

MGlCo> I did the upgrade of the kernel-source RPM and had to use -ivh --nodeps
MGlCo> --force options to install the kernel and the kernel-smp RPMs.

Using either of --nodeps and --force is asking for troubles... not to
mention a combination of two.

MGlCo>
MGlCo> I noticed that the kernel progress bar only reached the 50%.

Bad sign.

MGlCo> Everything seems to be fine, but what could be wrong or everything is
MGlCo> fine?

If you can run lilo without any complaints, I'd call it a pretty good
sign. Otherwise, noone knows. :)

If you wish to "install" a newer version, rather than "upgrade" (i.e.
"rpm -i" rather than "rpm -U"), then you have to often have to use
--force (or, at least --replacepkgs and --replacefiles).

However, using --nodeps is usually a danger sign.
