Hi,
I have installed RH 8.0 on a P4, Intel 845 m/c with
17'' samsung syncmaster monitor. The installation took
place well. But I am not able to get the graphical
interface.
The X server specifies the error as "No screens
found". Why does this error show up and how can I get
rid of it?
I am open to any suggestions, including
reinstallation. Please help.
Thanks in advance.
Neon.

Usually the trick is to have a good /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file : I don't
think you'll have to install the system another time.
My monitor is a Samsung syncmaster 753DFX 17'; here's the section to
put in your XF86Config-4 file :
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Samsung"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "Unknown"
HorizSync 30,0 - 71,0
VertRefresh 50,0 - 160,0
# ModeLine "1024x480" 65,0 1024 1032 1176 1344 480 488 494 563
# -hsync -vsync
#ModeLine "768x576" 50,0 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630
#ModeLine "768x576" 63,0 768 800 960 1024 576 578 590 616
EndSection
Try comment or sobstitute your Monitor section with this
....and check also the Screen section and the Server Layout section ....
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen1"
Device "***YOUR_VIDEO_CARD***"
Monitor "Samsung"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "What you want"
Screen "Screen1"
InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
Anyway don't forget to backup your current XF86Config-4 file!!!
Let me know how are things : if you don't succeed I'll send you a copy
of my XF86-Config-4 file.
Regards
Claudia
