Put this in your .bashrc:
This changes the bash shell prompt
# set prompt: ``username@hostname:/directory $ ''
PS1="[\u@\h:\w] "
case `id -u` in
0) PS1="${PS1}# ";;
*) PS1="${PS1}$ ";;
esac
