Recommendations for a tool to monitor the system state?

Hi,

this is my first posting to this list. So if this is an inappropriate
question to ask, please excuse me and point me to another place.

We are looking for a tool to monitor and constantly log the system load
(cpu, memory, disk-I/O, number of open sockets/files, etc.) and the overall
health of a Multi-CPU-System (Intel). That way we try to find the root
cause of the system appearing to be hung sporadically (once every 2 days on
average) for several minutes.
Free tools are preferred(not ps, top, etc.) but commercial ones will do.

Any suggestions are very welcome!

BigBrother might be the one you're looking for.

Zabbix is another one that looks promising and is easy
to setup.  Just go to www.linux.org, look under
Applications and click on the monitoring section.
There are quite a few programs listed there.

Reducing the TCO with Linux

Hello:
  I'm gathering information on how (or if) Linux reduces the total cost
of ownership.
  Can anyone point me to information regarding this topic? I'm also
interested if there is any study of the cost of retraining vs. reduction
of the TCO.
  And I heard that Microsoft made some articles blaming Linux and open
source and was blamed back by linuxers and open sourcers. Does anyone
know where they are? In this matter I'm interested in the risk of
adopting Linux vs. the risk of keep using MS software.

Linux Journal?  Doesn't that name reek of bias?  Although, that article 
does have some great points, and I would have to agree with at least a 25% 
saving by going with Linux.

Don't try to convince an architect of this though.  As much as it pains me: 
the way AutoCAD is licensed it's much cheaper to have an NT server do the 
licensing for you.  So we go back to the same old argument: under which 
application?

I think these studies need to be more specific to be more realistic.

That really depends on your application, and the skill level of your 
SysAdmin or local neighbourhood geek.

I can build a mail and http server for the cost of hardware and a few hours 
time.  The hardware is less expensive to achieve the same goal because 
Linux doesn't have to run a GUI to put up a web site.

My servers keep running, with out user intervention, until it's time for 
regular hardware maintenance.  Even software updates can be done while the 
system continues to run, no need for multiple reboots, so less money for 
me, :( and less cost to the owner. :)

When it comes to file sharing on a network, well, that is obvious, no "per 
seat" license, a lot less cost.

  Does anyone have experience with the Coda filesystem? I would like to
have a mail server with 2000 accounts replicated in real time. Is it
reliable enough?
