Windows 2000 uses NTFS, not VFAT.
There is read-only NTFS support in the kernel, but it's safest if you avoid
any read/write NTFS access in Linux as I believe it has a habit of breaking
things.

The fat filesystem is used for M$ floppies, not the fat32 filesystem (vfat
under linux).
Try using fat instead and see if that works.

I have Linux Mandrake release 8.0 with Kernel 2.2.20-9.2mdk.
The vfat isn't able to read any Windows 2000 diskettes. What needs
to be done to update vfat?

Why don't you use mtools.
That will give you DOS(OS) like commands e.g. mcopy, mmd, etc for use with
A: :) .

Unless mount works properly, I will not be able to use those mtools.

The following is part of the mount page:
(Note: fat is not a separate filesystem, but a common part of the
msdos, umsdos and
vfat filesystems.)
I used both msdos and vfat. The same CRC errors occurred, basically
those produced when files (not disks) are unreadable.

I know this sounds obvious, but are you absolutely sure that the
diskettes work? Can you read them ok on a 2000 machine? Can you read any
other disks on your linux machine? Is it possible that the floopy drive
is not funcioning correctly?
You should be able to mount functioning Windows 2k diskettes using
either vfat or msdos - in the case of diskettes, they are functionally
equivalent.
I presume that the mount command you are using is something like:
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
in which case the only other reason it wouldn't work would be because
vfat / msdos support is not compiled into your kernel.
Can you be more specific regarding the actual errors you are getting? Is
it that the disk won't mount, or is it that it mounts but then complains
it can't read it?
If the latter, it is almost certainly a fault with the drive or the
actual disk.
Paul.

Not so. mdir, mdel, mcopy, etc. all work on
unmounted diskettes, run into things like "Device
Busy" when trying to reference mounted diskettes.
There are times when it is easier to mount the
diskette, but there are times when the mtools are
a simpler way to do what you want to do with a
diskette.
