Hi..

Could you tell him what is the difference between HTML and CGI scripts??  
What is the relationship between them? When we need to create CGI script in 
/var/www/cgi-bin/ compare to the html scripts in /var/www/html/*.html

Look, I don't mean to sound harsh here, but if you can't figure this out
yourself by reading the available documentation, an answer from someone
on this list is probably not going to be meaningful or useful to you.

It might sound a little less harsh if you provide a pointer for him.

Simon,  what Tyler is saying (and I agree) is that the nature of your question shows how little you know about HTML in general and no one here really has the time to provide a tutorial for you.  I would suggest a class or online tutorial to get you up to
speed.  I first started with the O-Reilly books for basic HTML web pages.  There are many other good books available.

The short, high-level (and incomplete) answer to your question is that HTML code is essentially the I/O of a web page and CGI scripts are the logic.  A web page will collect user data and invoke the CGI script when you push the "submit" button.  The script
should output the results in HTML code.

Linux Backups

Hi All,

I'm getting a little fustrated with linux backup. I have about 30GB of data
residing on RedHat linux 7.1 that needs to be backed up. I've done backup
with GNU tar with compression but it only backs up 2GB worth of data onto
another machine. However, if I have 7GB of free space on the same machine,
tar will go over the 2GB limit. So that part confuses me.

I'm kinda hoping that someone knows a better way of backing up large data.
I've somewhat been reading Amanda but I'm not sure if that's the way to go.
I may be wrong since I'm new to linux backups.

Any suggestions/recommendations or pointers to go to websites to research on
would be greatly appreciated. Not having much luck on my own.

I use rsync from a bash script to back up to another machine on my network
overnight.  It seems to work fine for me.

Your tar (or filesystem) probably has a 2G limit in file size.

It seems you are stuck with 2Gb filesize limit, if so
you can try splitting them into 2Gb chunks, eg:

[/bdir] $ tar -cvzf - /data/to/backup | split -b2000m - mybackup.gz.

or

[/from/anydir] $ tar ... | (cd /bdir; split ... )

It will create mybackup.aa, mybackup.ab, .ac ... etc,
into /bdir, w/ size approx 2Gb each.

To restore, just do:

cat /bdir/mybackup.gz.* | tar -xvzf -

more info: man 1 split (from textutils package)

Storage systems

Dear all,

 I am addressing to you guys, to see if you could give some ideas...

 We are dessigning a system where we will need to store loads of tiff format image
files. We havent estimated yet which will be the amount of the image files that
there will be around 40-60 Gb/ a year. The problem is that those images should be
always accesible, we have thought about to create a database system to retrieve
those images and that way to develop a kind of image file server for the rest of
applications that need to get those image files.

 The environment is using linux and systems of low cost. We presumably would use
IDE hard disk drives.

 We have consider several ways to achieve it, clustering, etc...but,  After
considering using volume striping with LVM, the problem that we envisaged is that
such image file server would be working lot of hours, that means that IDE hard
disk drives after a few years could start to have disk failures (I think they are
meant to be use around 3-5 years)...

 Then we started to think about a massive storage system for small systems...but
that choice could be a bit expensive...

 I suppose you guys maybe you should have faced the deployment of such system. We
only are thinking about other possibilites we havent taken into account.

 If massive storage systems are our solution, we would like to know which
possibilities I could found for Linux (red hat if possible).

terminal problems with escape characters

I have a RedHat 7.3 linux box. I have enabled the telnet server.

I am trying to telnet my linux box from a unix-like system where the default
terminal setting is set to ansi.

I have succesfully changed the setting for the TERM variable to 'linux' or 'vt100'
or even 'xterm' (as I have found in several news).

But I am still experiencing when I edit files with the vi program, because of the
escape characters like the ones to move the cursor dont work...That´s my main
problem.

Anyway, I have thought that maybe it was due that I was telneting to the Unix box
using  the Windows 2000 telnet, but I have tried to use other telnet programs
(like putty), but I cant figure out what I have to change in the linux box
settings (or the telnet client)...

with OS < NT4 is a sizelimit with 2GB ...

... as a general rule, 'scripts' are thought to be 'executable'.  in the
broadest sense, HTML (HyperText Markup Language) might be considered a
'browser' script, and as such, limited to that universe.

    CGI (Common Gateway Interface) makes OS resources available to the
'browser' when called from within html processing.  ./*.cgi should be
command-line executable, while ./*.html is not.


    you are cautioned to consider the security implications of running
cgi ...
