Intall Linux with Windows already installed

Hi everybody,

I would like to install RedHat Linux on my laptop. The problem is that I
dont have any CD of WindowsXP available and I need to have windows. What I
want is to install linux in my laptop without having to reinstall
windowsXP, is it possible? is there any utilities that can help me do
that? to respect the current windowsXP installation and install Linux in
the remaining space available? Like a dynamic partition disc utility?

Any suggestions? Readings?

yes it is possible, i do this all the time.

1) make sure you have windows installed _first_
2) you must have free space on the drive (ie. not used by windows)
3) boot from the redhat cd and do the install but be careful when making the
partitions so as not to overwrite windows.
4) when it asks to setup the bootloader, you will see that there are two
boot options now (usually only 'RedHat Linux') so you can either name the
other one windows or it may already have a name.

It happen to me that "winbugs" take all the disk space to it, even the 
unpartitioned, so linux dont let me assign that space, if this is your case, 
i recommend vmware [look @ www.vmware.com] to emulate rh over winbugs, its 
not the same but it save to reinstall both, wXP and RH again.

A better option is to shrink the Windows partition with a tool such as 
Partition Magic, and leave free unallocated space for Linux.  There is a 
free tool included with most Linux distributions called FIPS, but it is 
not as powerful as Partition Magic.  It may do the job for you.  Since I 
have not used it I am not sure if it can handle NTFS partitions, so 
caveat emptor.

Another option is to simply use another hard drive.  This is what I do, 
with Windows ME and RedHat 8.  GRUB is installed in the MBR on the first 
drive.  Windows was installed on the first drive first, then RedHat was 
installed on the second drive, and I had it install GRUB on the first 
drive with an option to boot Windows.  You can't install Windows second, 
because its MBR will overwrite LILO or GRUB.

I would reccomend that you use a program like that found at 
http://terabyteunlimited.com/booting.html
It's not Linux native, but it can resize the NTFS (even the new version 
which Microsoft put out with WinXP). I have used it on my Toshiba laptop 
with no problems. If you don't have a floppy drive, it's a disk image, 
so just treat that as the disk image while making a bootable cd. To 
change the partition table, just boot off of the floppy and click cancel 
to the installation. That puts you into maintenance mode, where you can 
move the partitions around. I would reccomend buying it, it's a really 
beautiful piece of software. Otherwise, you can just download a free 30 
day trial version from their website.
