This is probably obvious but it's escaping me at the moment:

I have a RedHat 8.0 box and when I do a kernel "make menuconfig" on the
console the screen is all screwed up, like it isn't drawing the thin
lines, and the text colors are different. When I ssh into the box and do a
"make menuconfig" everything is fine and the menu appears normal.

Why would everything be fine in ssh but screwed up on the console?

While we're on the same topic, where is the kernel source,
anyway?

I installed RedHat 8.0 for the first time the other day,
been using 7.2 and other Vendors' distributions up till
now. Also for the first time I chose one of the pre-configured
installations rather than selecting the packages myself.

So, last night I boot up for the first time and wanted to build
a new kernel straight off, and hey, my kernel source isn't
where I've normally been finding it for the last 5 years.

What's up. Did it move with RedHat 8.0? Or is it just not
installed
with a Server installation?

Andy

... i noticed a similar situation when installing RH-8.0. the curses
based install was all 'screwed up', and i had to use the 'graphic'
install to get it done.

    then, afterward, the terminal wants to wrap at about 60 characters.
i have yet to figure that crap out.

    rather than do a 'server' install, i chose the packages i wanted
installed, and the 'kernel' stuff ended up under "/usr/src" ...

It's known issue in 8.0, check out here:

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-8.0-Manual/release-notes/x86/

the Distribution General Notes section

It says:

Distribution General Notes

    *

      Red Hat Linux now installs using UTF-8 (Unicode) locales by default
in languages other than Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

      This has been known to cause various issues:

       Line drawing characters in applications such as make menuconfig do
not always appear correctly in certain locales.

Any idea on what to do to fix it?

I found this mini-howto:

http://www.frozenblue.net/tools/howtos/?v=redhat-8-console-fonts

But all I've managed to do is screw up "make menuconfig" when I ssh in
also, in addition to not working correctly on the console.

This is usually a good sign, right? ;-)

It's good sign because after you get something all screwed up there's
nowhere to go but the solution.

Here's what I did:

/etc/sysconfig/i18n

#LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
#SUPPORTED="en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en"
#SYSFONT="latarcyrheb-sun16"

LANG="en_US"
SUPPORTED="en_US.iso885915:en_US:en"
SYSFONT="lat0-sun16"
SYSFONTACM="iso15"

The commented out lines are the original RedHat 8, the rest is from RedHat
7.3 allegedly, I didn't have a 7.3 system handy to check though.

Then I tossed /bin/unicode_stop into my rc.local, although I suppose I
could have altered the unicode_start in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.

So now "make menuconfig" works on the console and everywhere else and I'm
happy.

I don't know whether this is a good solution in general, whether it
negatively affects other applications. My particular installation is for a
server so I'm not really running apps and I haven't installed X or
anything. YMMV.

Eric
