Hey Everyone,

I want to convert a window based desktop (DELL/Window
XP Professional) to a linux based station.

Do I need to get a new driver so that I can continue
to use the ethernet interface? The same ethernet
interface has been working pretty well under Window
XP. Yet, I am not sure whether I need new driver so
that the same card can be managed by Linux.

Thanks!
Mikey

Shorter answer is yes. The driver used will be
different.BUT, the good news is when you go through the
install of the distro of Linux that you decide to use, the
actual driver that will get used will most likely be
installed automagically. Meaning, you might not have to
worry about what driver is being used (although it might
be usefull to know later on in life).

What brand NIC do you have? Since it's a Dell, I'm
guessing either Intel, Cnet or Broadcom.

That kinda depends on the distro, dunnit?

For instance,
I can verify that the broadcom in the Dell dimension 2400
which has been shipping for the last few months is NOT
supported by RedHat 9.0 and backwards. Well, not from
the native CDs/ISOs or their respective updates as provided
by RHN, anyway.

But Broadcom offers downloads (src.rpm and tarballs) and
the work a dream.
