Yes, I use the NEC 2500A, and it works splendid!
You can use cdrecord for dvd-burning, yes. But the "original" choice
for that would be growisofs, although I use the k3b interface for
burning dvds.
The new NEC supports dual-layer, but I have not tried that, nor the Sony model.

I didn't even know about growisofs (which was already on my machine, and
I'll start playing with it now that I know it's here), but I have
successfully burned DVD-R disks with the dvd capable cdrecord binary
(true, no source code, but it works well, and I am able to use the free
key since I work at a school). I am using a Sony external USB drive,
model # DRX-510UL.

I'm using a Pioneer A07 an everything is fine with growiso, even DISCs with
some stuky bit that cdrecord / dvdrecord refuse to record and made unusable.

I recommend to you DVD+RW media cause growiso, treat it as a really
multisession DVD, compatible with almost all DVD-player even if you made a
bootable one, next sessions preserves the boot, and in bios stage, new files
can be accessible.

it's amazing
