(Please be more specific if possible next time: which "Linux" are you using, and what brand NIC do you have?)

1. Try 'ethtool' if you have RedHat 8.0.
-or-
2. Search the web once you figure out what card you have.

There's also tools like mii-diag. With #2 above, you would likely enter options in /etc/modules.conf (for RedHat anyway).

As a last result, you can go through the source code for the driver, and found the required options.

Marco

What card?

See kernel documentation. Assuming your kernel source is in /usr/src, look
in /usr/src/linux<versioin>/Documentation/networking and look for the file
about your card.

Hi Simon,
What the two others state is true, modifying 'modules.conf' is the
best. If you are trying to get two 10/100 boards to connect at 100 Mb
using a x-over cable, it will not negotiate faster than 10 Mb. It
requires a hub to initiate that. 10/100 Mb full duplex is just a
matter of having a cable with 1&2 -> 1&2, 3&6 -> 3&6, 4&5 -> 4&5, and
7&8 -> 7&8, and a hub that supports it. At 10 Mb, a crossover cable
will get you your 10+10=20, but again not 100+100=200. I hope this
helps.

Regards, Andrew

Hi Marco,
Sorry, I typed too fast. I have had zero luck with both the Intel
100B and 3COM 3C9X5. Perhaps the NIC's you are using are smarter now.
I do get 100 Mb, but not full-duplex. That is negotiated by the hub.

My Intel 100s NICs on IBM xSeries 205 eServers, running RH7.2 with 2.4
Kernel, MDK7.2 with 2.2 Kernel, and MDK8.2 with 2.4 Kernel, just work,
100Mb full-duplex. Maybe it's your motherboard?

Really though, you are creating a guessing game when you don't supply these
people with complete information as they requested. Perhaps you are
working in a top secret facility, but we really have a need to know your
hardware and software configs to get you a good answer.

Regards.

Scott.
