The problem is meanwhile resolved.  After resetting some options(builtin ->
modules) it didn't complain .

Did you do a:

make bzImage

As far as I remember, the vmlinuz target used to be very big and
didn't fit in the first 1024 cylinders or something like that.
Only lilo used to have such problems, though, and not grub.

bzImage is a compressed kernel image.
