So we will always reserve a big space for all CET tasks?

Currently if an application does dlopen() a legacy lib, it will have only
partial IBT protection and no SHSTK.  Do we want to consider simply turning
off IBT in that case?

Suppose some program in a container chroots itself and then tries to
create an fscontext backed by "/path/to/blockdev".  The syscall gets
intercepted by a container manager.  That manager now has a somewhat
awkward time of mounting the same fs, although it could use
"/proc/PID/root/path/to/blockdev", I suppose.  Even that approach has
some potentially awkward permission issues.  I would defer to the
people who actually write software like this, but I can imagine fds
being considerably easier to work with.

In kernel/ptrace.c,

If there is a hole in the regset array, the empty slot's
regset->core_note_type is not defined.

Yes, you suggested that.  I'm asking if we actually need that.

I'm not entirely sure, but that might prevent the filesystem from being able
to use it, since userspace might then prevent the filesystem getting exclusive
holdership.

Isn’t that more or less what I was suggesting?  I suggested dfd and path and I also suggested just an fd and letting the caller open the file itself.

Erm, I wanted to say 'CFE', i.e. the abbreviation of 'Control Flow Enforcement'.

Christoph Hellwig suggested a slightly different path for handling
backwards compatibility with the 32-bit time_t based system calls:

Rather than simply reusing the compat_sys_* entry points on 32-bit
architectures unchanged, we get rid of those entry points and the
compat_time types by renaming them to something that makes more sense
on 32-bit architectures (which don't have a compat mode otherwise),
and then share the entry points under the new name with the 64-bit
architectures that use them for implementing the compatibility.

The following types and interfaces are renamed here, and moved
from linux/compat_time.h to linux/time32.h:

I considered doing this only for those instances that are actually
shared between 32-bit and 64-bit kernels, but doing it everywhere avoids
duplication.  This should make more sense for the 32-bit implementation,
and the naming suggests that these interfaces are meant for 'old'
syscalls only, and that they always operate on 32-bit time_t on both
32-bit and 64-bit architectures, something that may not be obvious from
the compat_* naming.

I'm not renaming the timex, rusage and itimerval structures, as we are
still debating what the new interface will look like, and whether we
will need a replacement at all.

This also doesn't change the names of the syscall entry points, which can
be done more easily when we actually switch over the 32-bit architectures
to use them, at that point we need to change COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx to
SYSCALL_DEFINEx with a new name, e.g. with a _time32 suffix.

Both Deepa and I have pending syscall conversion patches, but if we
can get consensus on the rename, they should be easy to rebase on top
of this patch.

The patch would be easy to split up in various ways, but since it
is a trivial rename, I went for a big patch with the first attempt.

+JTAG is an industry standard for verifying hardware. JTAG provides access to

Driver adds support of Aspeed 2500/2400 series SOC JTAG master controller.

Driver implements the following jtag ops:
- freq_get;
- freq_set;
- status_get;
- idle;
- xfer;

It has been tested on Mellanox system with BMC equipped with
Aspeed 2520 SoC for programming CPLD devices.

Initial patch for JTAG driver
JTAG class driver provide infrastructure to support hardware/software
JTAG platform drivers. It provide user layer API interface for flashing
and debugging external devices which equipped with JTAG interface
using standard transactions.

Driver exposes set of IOCTL to user space for:
- XFER:
- SIR (Scan Instruction Register, IEEE 1149.1 Data Register scan);
- SDR (Scan Data Register, IEEE 1149.1 Instruction Register scan);
- RUNTEST (Forces the IEEE 1149.1 bus to a run state for a specified
  number of clocks).
- SIOCFREQ/GIOCFREQ for setting and reading JTAG frequency.

Driver core provides set of internal APIs for allocation and
registration:
- jtag_register;
- jtag_unregister;
- jtag_alloc;
- jtag_free;

Platform driver on registration with jtag-core creates the next
entry in dev folder:
/dev/jtagX

When a need raise up to use JTAG interface for system's devices
programming or CPU debugging, usually the user layer
application implements jtag protocol by bit-bang or using a 
proprietary connection to vendor hardware.
This method can be slow and not generic.
 
We propose to implement general JTAG interface and infrastructure
to communicate with user layer application. In such way, we can
have the standard JTAG interface core part and separation from
specific HW implementation.
This allow new capability to debug the CPU or program system's 
device via BMC without additional devices nor cost. 

This patch purpose is to add JTAG master core infrastructure by 
defining new JTAG class and provide generic JTAG interface
to allow hardware specific drivers to connect this interface.
This will enable all JTAG drivers to use the common interface
part and will have separate for hardware implementation.

The JTAG (Joint Test Action Group) core driver provides minimal generic
JTAG interface, which can be used by hardware specific JTAG master
controllers. By providing common interface for the JTAG controllers,
user space device programing is hardware independent.
 
Modern SoC which in use for embedded system' equipped with
internal JTAG master interface.
This interface is used for programming and debugging system's
hardware components, like CPLD, FPGA, CPU, voltage and
industrial controllers.
Firmware for such devices can be upgraded through JTAG interface during
Runtime. The JTAG standard support for multiple devices programming,
is in case their lines are daisy-chained together.

For example, systems which equipped with host CPU, BMC SoC or/and 
number of programmable devices are capable to connect a pin and
select system components dynamically for programming and debugging,
This is using by the BMC which is equipped with internal SoC master
controller.
For example:

BMC JTAG master --> pin selected to CPLDs chain for programming (filed
upgrade, production) 
BMC JTAG master --> pin selected to voltage monitors for programming 
(field upgrade, production) 
BMC JTAG master --> pin selected to host CPU (on-site debugging 
and developers debugging)

For example, we can have application in user space which using calls
to JTAG driver executes CPLD programming directly from SVF file
 
The JTAG standard (IEEE 1149.1) defines the next connector pins:
- TDI (Test Data In);
- TDO (Test Data Out);
- TCK (Test Clock);
- TMS (Test Mode Select);
- TRST (Test Reset) (Optional);

The SoC equipped with JTAG master controller, performs
device programming on command or vector level. For example
a file in a standard SVF (Serial Vector Format) that contains
boundary scan vectors, can be used by sending each vector
to the JTAG interface and the JTAG controller will execute
the programming.

Initial version provides the system calls set for:
- SIR (Scan Instruction Register, IEEE 1149.1 Instruction Register scan);
- SDR (Scan Data Register, IEEE 1149.1 Data Register scan);
- RUNTEST (Forces the IEEE 1149.1 bus to a run state for a specified
  number of clocks.

SoC which are not equipped with JTAG master interface, can be built
on top of JTAG core driver infrastructure, by applying bit-banging of
TDI, TDO, TCK and TMS pins within the hardware specific driver.

Please don't do it this way.

We have two styles of page fault:
1. User page faults: find a VMA, try to handle (allocate memory et al.),
   kill process if we can't handle.
2. Kernel page faults: search for a *discrete* set of conditions that
   can be handled, including faults in instructions marked in exception
   tables.

X86_PF_USER *means*: do user page fault handling.  In the places where
the hardware doesn't set it, but we still want user page fault handling,
we manually set it, like this where we "downgrade" an implicit
supervisor access to a user access:

No, I'm pointing out that you can't emulate this by doing a bind mount from
userspace if you can't access the thing you're binding from.

Now, we could create a syscall that just picks up an extant superblock using a
device and attaches it to a mount for you, but that would have to be at least
partially parameterised - which would be very fs-dependent - so that it can
know whether or not you're allowed to create another mount to that sb.

What you're talking about is emulating sget() in userspace - when we have to
do it in the kernel anyway if we still offer mount(2).

We do need manpages a well.  If I had to do it for protection keys,

I think it makes (some) sense. The USER bit is set for a page fault that was done with user privilege. So a descriptor table fault at CPL 3 has USER clear (regardless of the cause of the fault) and WRUSS has USER set.

I am tempted to suggest that the whole series not be merged until there are actual docs. It’s not a fantastic precedent.

I was wrong and misread the docs.  We do not get X86_PF_USER set when
EFLAGS.AC=1.

But, we *do* get X86_PF_USER (otherwise defined to be set when in ring3)
when running in ring0 with the WRUSS instruction and some other various
shadow-stack-access-related things.  I'm sure folks had a good reason
for this architecture, but it is a pretty fundamentally *new*
architecture that we have to account for.

This new architecture is also not spelled out or accounted for in the
SDM as of yet.  It's only called out here as far as I know:

Are you trying to preserve the magic bind semantics with the new API?  If you are, I think it should be by explicit opt in only. Otherwise you risk having your shiny new way to specify fs options get ignored when the magic bind mount happens.
