[PATCH v3 0/4] : AArch64: KGDB support

Based on the step-handler and break-handler hooks patch from
Sandeepa (Patch 1), KGDB debugging support is added for EL1
debug in AArch64 mode. Any updates that come for Patch 1 from
Sandeepa will be rebased in next version

With second patch,register layout is updated to be inline with GDB tool.
Basic GDB connection, break point set/clear and info commands
are supported except step/next debugging

With third patch, step/next debugging support is added, where in
pc is updated to point to the instruction to be stepped and
stopped.

with fourth patch, the compile time breakpoint instruction
reordering is fixed by making kgbd_breakpoint() as noinline

 - Rebased to v4 version of Sandeepa Prabhu's patch (patch 1)
 - Made dynamic break point instruction encoding generic
 - Made ESR value encoding generic for dynamic and compile break point
 - Used memcpy and memset to copy register contents to gdb buffer
 - Fixed reordering of break point instruction by compiler with
   patch 3
 - Rebased against AAach64 upstream kernel

 - Moved break instruction encoding to debug-monitors.h file
 - Fixed endianess of compile break instruction encoding
 - Updated I/O buffer sizes
 - Updated register buffer size
 - Remove changes to debug_exception handler in entry.S for

[PATCH v3 1/4] arm64: support single-step and breakpoint handler hooks

AArch64 Single Steping and Breakpoint debug exceptions will be
used by multiple debug framworks like kprobes & kgdb.

This patch implements the hooks for those frameworks to register
their own handlers for handling breakpoint and single step events.

Reworked the debug exception handler in entry.S: do_dbg to route
software breakpoint (BRK64) exception to do_debug_exception()

[PATCH v3 2/4] AArch64: KGDB: Add Basic KGDB support

Add KGDB debug support for kernel debugging.
With this patch, basic KGDB debugging is possible.GDB register
layout is updated and GDB tool can establish connection with
target and can set/clear breakpoints.

This mostly looks fine to me now. The only remaining concerns I have are
about FP support (currently you just return zeroes for the simd register
file) and the limited BUFMAX definition (the register file with simd is
around 800 bytes afaict, and that's before you add the GDB packet
information and checksums).

What's the plan on sorting those out?

I was looking for toolchain & platform support to validate FP support.
Now I have the infrastructure to work.
I will take up after completing this activity (provided if no one is
working on this)

Are you sure that there may be an option parameter even in 'D' or 'k'?
'D' means "detach" and 'k' means "kill", AFAIK, they don't take any
parameters. No other architectures (except arm) handle the case
in such way, neither.

right, they generally don't carry parameter. However 'D' packet can
take pid (see gdb serial protocol)

Other architectures handle the state, by modifying kgdb_single_step or
kgdb_cpu_doing_single_step, when entering into or exiting from single
step mode.

Do you have a good reason that you don't need to do so on arm64?
(I'm just asking because my own kgdb patch follows the way that x86 does.)

 The 'kgdb_cpu_doing_single_step' is set with the cpu on which the step command
is issued for that pid. So when an debug exception occurs, the debug
handler (kdgb_cpu_enter)
checks if cpu on which step debug was enabled acquires master lock and
step debugging
is performed on the same cpu for the pid

In case of arm64, the step exception is always taken on the cpu on
which the step
debugging is enabled and step debugging is disabled on continue command.

In case of kgdb_single_step, if this is not set, the slave locks
(cpu's which has not
taken debug exception) are released for every step command and
acquired on next step
exception and slave cpu's are again set into tight loop by sending smp
request/nmi.
When set, the slave locks are not released untill step debugging ends.
So it avoids acquiring slave lock for every step debug exception

This improvement can be taken for arm64. I will re-send new version of patches
But I don't see this is taken care in armv7

Though this call is surrounded by wmb() barrier,
the compile can still re-order the break point,
because this scheduling barrier is not a code motion
barrier in gcc.

Making kgdb_breakpoint() as noinline solves this problem
of code reording around break point instruction and also
avoids problem of being called as inline function from
other places
