The ICH_HCR_EL2 traps are used when running on GICv3 hardware, or when
running a GICv3-based guest using FEAT_GCIE_LEGACY on GICv5
hardware. When running a GICv2 guest on GICv3 hardware the traps are
used to ensure that the guest never sees any part of GICv3 (only GICv2
is visible to the guest), and when running a GICv3 guest they are used
to trap in specific scenarios. They are not applicable for a
GICv2-native guest, and won't be applicable for a(n upcoming) GICv5
guest.
The traps themselves are configured in the vGIC CPU IF state, which is
stored as a union. Updating the wrong aperture of the union risks
corrupting state, and therefore needs to be avoided at all costs.
Bail early if we're not running a compatible guest (GICv2 on GICv3
hardware, GICv3 native, GICv3 on GICv5 hardware). Trap everything
unconditionally if we're running a GICv2 guest on GICv3
hardware. Otherwise, conditionally set up GICv3-native trapping.

v6.18-rc2 introduces a failure in the KVM no-vgic-v3 selftest on what
appears to be all arm64 platforms with a GICv3 in all of VHE, nVHE and
pKVM modes:
# selftests: kvm: no-vgic-v3
# Random seed: 0x6b8b4567
# ==== Test Assertion Failure ====

not ok 25 selftests: kvm: no-vgic-v3 # exit=254
introduced by this patch, which is commit 3193287ddffb and which never
appeared in -next prior to being merged into mainline.
It didn't appear in -next since the arm64 KVM fixes tree is not directly
in -next and it was only pulled into Paolo's tree on Saturday, a few
hours before Paolo sent his pull request to Linus, so there was no
opportunity for it to be picked up. As I've previously suggested it
does seem like it would be a good idea to include the fixes branches for
the KVM arch trees in -next (s390 is there, but I don't see the others),
and/or to have more cooking time between things being pulled into the
main KVM fixes branch and being sent to Linus.

FWIW, "kvm-x86 fixes" is in -next (unless I've screwed up recently), it just gets
routed in via "kvm-x86 next" via an octopus merge.

As I explained to you more than once, the answer is still no. We keep
the two branches separate for good reasons -- for a start, they are
manager by different people.
If you want to manage a -fixes tree, go for it. If you want to take
the -fixes branch in your CI, I have no objection. Do I support this?
Absolutely not.

Ah, excellent - I was just checking for separate fixes branches. It
would still be nice to have your fixes branch in -next directly so that
it can be included in pending-fixes (which merges only fixes branches),
that does get some specific coverage so we notice if there's any
dependencies on -next changes that wasn't noticed (it exists because
there were a few issues with that a while back). It's very rare for it
to find anything but it doesn't hurt.

You do keep saying that but I am still unable to understand your
reasoning here. Having two separate branches is very standard, it is
the normal pattern for fixes branches in -next and does not generally
present any problems that I am aware of. A bit more than a third of the
branches merged by -next are fixes branches. As I said in my earlier
reply to Sean it can be an advantage to have the fixes in -next
separately since this allows the fixes to go into pending-fixes, helping
spot unintended dependencies on work that's targeting the merge window
and ensure coverage continues even when there is breakage in development
code.
As I understand it the management of the KVM arm64 tree is very similar
to that for the arm64 architecture tree. That has the separate feature and
fixes branches in -next, each managed by different people and both of
which are in -next. So far as I am aware this hasn't been causing Will
and Catalin any problems, I don't know what would be different about the
KVM arm64 tree here.
The only thing I can think of is that you are objecting to the idea of
having the KVM arm64 tree merge it's fixes branch into it's development
branch. That is not what I am suggesting, I am suggesting putting the
fixes branch itself directly into -next to be merged by Stephen. I am
not proposing any change to the content of the KVM arm64 branches.

There is no need for anyone to create a -fixes tree since we already
have pending-fixes, created as part of building -next. The merge for
-next pulls in all the fixes branches first, publishes that as
next/pending-fixes, and then merges the new feature branches on top of
that to publish as next/master.

Then I don't know why you even involve me here.
You can pull anything you want in -next, and you don't need my
approval for it. I still don't think this is a good idea because the
life cycles are totally different, but if you like making your own
life complicated, go ahead, I'm not going to stop you.

Generally any branch in -next is included at the request of the
maintainer, and one of the things that's attached to a branch in -next
is a set of contacts to report any merge issues - generally whoever
maintains the branch. I *could* ask Stephen to add the fixes tree but
it'd be very weird for me to do that, and if you are actively hostile
I'm not sure what to do about contacts since I would have expected that
to be you and Oliver. Oliver, I don't know if you have thoughts here?
I really do not understand your objection here, including fixes branches
in -next is a totally standard thing which as I have mentioned does not
seem to be causing issues for the other trees that do it. It is true
that fixes get sent upstream faster (I think that's what you mean when
you say the life cycles are different?) but I don't see why this would
be a problem, if anything it is normally helpful to get test coverage
sooner so there's more time for any issues to be noticed.
The current situation creates work, and I would expect including the
fixes branch in -next to reduce that work and generally make things less
stressful. Currently we get test issues like the one that started this
thread getting caught only when they hit an upstream tree, this tends to
make them more of an emergency. We also get issues when a problem is
detected in -next where the fix should be sent as a fix, even after the
fix is applied it does not appear in -next until it has been pulled by
Paolo. In both cases even people doing testing still have whatever was
failing showing as a failure in the the time between the fix being
applied and it showing up in Paolo's tree which adds to their workload
and can obscure other issues. Reducing the latency on getting fixes
visible in -next solves actual problems with the testing workflow.
