Hello there :)
I'm using Mandrake 10.0 Official with the updated Kernel 2.6.3-15mdk. I
have an USB Bluetooth dongle from AVM (BlueFritz) which don't work... :(
I've copied the firmware to the /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware directory.
hotplugd starts at boot time. I've changed to an older version of the
AVM-firmware, because Marcel told me, that this Kernel won't work with
the newest firmware.
I've downloaded and installed the newest version of bluez-libs,
bluez-utils, bluezs-pin, bluez-firmware, bluez-hcidump and bluez-hciemu.
(I've compiled myself, no rpm-packages) Source for the software:
http://www.bluez.org/download.html.
When I'm typing "hciconfig" in a console, nothing happens...
Looks like this:
[root@localhost sigrid]# hciconfig
[root@localhost sigrid]#
Nothing happens :(
In my /var/log/syslog, I found this entries:
[root@localhost sigrid]# grep Blue /var/log/syslog
Aug 11 19:51:49 localhost kernel: Bluetooth: Core ver 2.3
Aug 11 19:51:49 localhost kernel: Bluetooth: HCI device and connection

Aug 11 22:42:04 localhost kernel: Bluetooth: CMTP (CAPI Emulation) ver

[root@localhost sigrid]#
I've deinstalled my older packages an installed the new packages from
the above mentioned site.
This are the entries from my /var/log/messages:

I'm missing an entry for loading the firmware.... (or I'm blind and
don't see this entry...
Has anyone an idea what can I do? I want my Bluetooth dongle working
under Linux (under Windows it works! - so there's no problem with the
dongle).
If you need more infos, tell me, what you need, I'll give it to you
Greetings
Sigrid

are the hotplug scripts installed (look for /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent)
and show us the content of /proc/bus/usb/devices after you plugged in
the dongle.

are you sure that hciconfig is showing nothing? Check dmesg for
Bluetooth related messages.

and this is the problem. The firmware loading generates an oops. You
must install a newer kernel (at least 2.6.8-rc3) before we can proceed.

Now, I have updated to 2.6.8-0.rc2.2mdk (sorry, but I'm not used in
compiling my own kernel, so I prefer rpm-packages, is easier... ;))
Now, it looks a little bit better:

No kernel-oops :)
Should I change the firmware again? Do you know which version of the
AVM-firmware have problems with the kernel? The first version I've
tested, was 3-18-39, after that, I've changed to 3-17-53.

this depends on if we get this working without any trouble. Otherwise
you must compile a vanilla kernel, because I don't know what patches
they included.

But the firmware request still fails. Where do you put your bfubase.frm
file? Is hotplug installed and do you have a firmware.agent script under
/etc/hotplug.

Use the older one, because I don't know if this kernel includes my
workaround.

OK, I'll try it. If it's not working I'm going to download the vanilla
kernel.

I've copied the bfubase.frm file to /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware
And, yes, I have the firmware.agent scrip under /etc/hotplug.

The firmware request fails with the old and the new file. It makes no
difference. :(

check the permissions of both. What does these two commands say?
ls -la /etc/hotplug
ls -la /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware
Attach the firmware.agent script so we can look inside.

I've changed it to:
[root@localhost sigrid]# ls -la /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware
insgesamt 424
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 9 22:13 ./
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Aug 6 20:31 ../
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 418352 Aug 13 21:28 bfubase.frm
[root@localhost sigrid]#
Greetings
