Hello, I'm trying to get sniff mode working between two devices. My
understanding is that this is not directly supported by bluez
(http://mhonarc.axis.se/bluetooth-dev/msg03437.html), so I'm trying to
send the relevant HCI commands directly -- but I can't seem to get it to
work. A quick trace of all the information is below... basically, it
seems to send the command ok, but it just comes back with an error
(which I think I have translated to just "HCI parameter error"). Any
thoughts on what might be going wrong? =20
Cheers,
Trevor

run "hcidump -X -V" in the back for the decoding.

Thanks, Marcel. See the output below. It says "Unsupported Feature of
Parameter value" -- so, I suppose this means either that the feature
isn't supported by my particular BT device, or that I'm getting
something wrong :-). This is a fairly new SilliconWave dongle, so I
would assume it would work... (I've also tried with other devices with
similar results).
How can I decode the features bits given by "hciconfig -a"?
The other question would be if I'm getting the parameters right, but...
I'm not quite sure how to figure that one out. I've tried a variety of
parameters, but they all end up the same.
Cheers,
Trevor

I answered one of my questions myself... looks like both devices should
support sniff mode just fine...

use the latest hcidump. It might decode the sniff request for you.

If you're doing this via raw HCI, make sure you or the host stack has
sent HCI_write_link_policy_settings (or
HCI_write_default_link_policy_settings) at both ends to allow sniff
mode. I believe bluez does this if you have the hcid.conf set up
correctly.

Thanks everybody for their help.... I got sniff mode working...
1) the BT device I was using didn't seem to really support it (it said
it did, but would reject all options to the command) -- so, I found a
more-recent device
2) I was sending commands in the wrong order through hcitool cmd
(big-endian instead of little endian)=20
Cheers,
Trevor
