Didn't find much in the palm newsgroups. I have no idea, because as you correctly said, the Palm is at fault here (if your PIN code was '1' on both sides). However don't try to pair at all. If an authentication is really needed you will asked for the PIN code at that time. Simply start to use your Palm.
