I was wrong, it does generate bounce spam :/

Sure. And I figured out what happened - I ran the command to send using
my kernel.org address from the corporate network, where it cannot be
used. It delivered the mail to microchip.com addresses though, for some
reason I don't quite understand, which is why I was able to reply to it.
