This series add support for the ST7571 LCD Controller.
It is a 4 gray scale dot matrix LCD controller that supports several
interfaces such as SPI, I2C and a 8bit parallell port.
The controlelr supports both monochrome and grayscale displays.

This driver only supports the I2C interface, but all common parts could
easily be put into a common file to be used with other interfaces.
I only have I2C to test with.

The device is a little defiant, it tends to NAK some commands, but all
commands takes effect, hence the I2C_M_IGNORE_NAK flag.

---
Changes in v4:
- (dt-binding) Add sitronix,grayscale property
- Describe why ignore_nack may be needed
- Make drm_to_st7571 an inline function
- Add support to clear screen
- Change from C2 to R2
- Add support for XRGB8888
- Use dev_err_probe() where appropriate
- Make Kconfig config depend on MMU
- Introduce device data to prepare for support for other chips
- Add support for drm_encoder_helper_funcs.atomic_en(dis)able
- Link to v3: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20250408-st7571-v3-0-200693efec57@gmail.com

Changes in v3:
- (dt-binding) Use 'Controller' rather than 'Panel' in texts
- (dt-binding) Constrain the reg property
- (dt-binding) Remove panel-timing description
- (dt-binding) Change description
- Mostly cosmetic changes in the driver code
- Don't call drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() in remove()
- Link to v2: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20250404-st7571-v2-0-4c78aab9cd5a@gmail.com

Changes in v2:
- Reworked pretty much the whole driver to not use obsolete code.
- Use panel and timing bindings to specify resolution and panel size
- Link to v1: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20250402-st7571-v1-0-351d6b9eeb4a@gmail.com

That's fully deducible from compatible, no? Or does it depend on actual
panel, but then what else depends on the panel?

Krzysztof

No it is not, the ST7571 is only the controller and some properties
depends on the connected LCD.

ST7571 supports both grayscale and monochrome LCDs but has no way to
know what is connected.

Other properties that depends on the LCD are:
panel-timing.hactive
panel-timing.vactive
panel-timing.vfront-porch

In the first revisons of the driver, I thought I could let the
grayscale and monochrome setting depends on which pixel format that
where used, but that was not the case.

You could also use the GENMASK() and FIELD_PREP() macros for these, e.g:

#define ST7571_SET_COLUMN_LSB(c)		(0x00 | FIELD_PREP(GENMASK(3, 0), (c)))
#define ST7571_SET_COLUMN_MSB(c)		(0x10 | FIELD_PREP(GENMASK(3, 0), (c) >> 4))
#define ST7571_SET_COM0_LSB(x)			(FIELD_PREP(GENMASK(6, 0), (x)))
#define ST7571_SET_COM0_MSB			(0x44)
#define ST7571_SET_COM_SCAN_DIR(d)		(0xc0 | FIELD_PREP(GENMASK(3, 3), (d)))

[...]

Maybe a comment here that this function only exists due regmap expecting
both a .write and .read handler even for devices that are write only, e.g:

/* The st7571 driver does not read registers but regmap expects a .read */

That looks better, I will change to use those macros.

Sure

If the display is 4bit grayscale it still expect each pixel to be
written as two bits. The mapping is as follows:
0 0 => White
0 1 => Light gray
1 0 => Dark gray
1 1 => Black

So here I write the data twice to get a black&white image for monochrome
formats.
This is not tested though, I only have a monochrome display to test
with.

I will extend the comment to explain this.

Thanks!
