There are 2 things.
1) You don't need to compile a kernel with debug symbols as of now or change
any configuration. This doesn't seem something related to kernel configuration.
2) The images you posted in the bug report like drop.jpg
Begin: Waiting for root file system ... Begin: Running
/scripts/local-block ... done.

done.
Gave up waiting for root device.
and drops me into an (initramfs) shell
When you drop into (initramfs) shell, if you could get the /sbin/blkid output
it would be great.
It is strange that the keyboard doesn't work . I hope you have compiled the
kernel after make config/menuconfig .
a) make
b) make modules_install
c) make install
Step (b) is missed sometimes by many. It installs the necessary drivers in
/lib/modules/`uname -r` and them puts them in initramfs. So one possible reason
is missing make modules_install.
The size of initrd.x.y.img should easily tell you that.
lsinitramfs /boot/initrd.img-4.6.0 should have the necessary modules like
usbkbd.ko.
In my case.
lsinitramfs /boot/initrd.img-4.6.0+ | grep usbkbd
lib/modules/4.6.0+/kernel/drivers/hid/usbhid/usbkbd.ko
I guess it would be helpful to have these as well . I'm guess blkid is not
returning anything could also mean your block layer disk is not being detected
or something wrong.
echo "KBU"
cat /proc/partitions
/sbin/blkid
cat /proc/cmdline
dmesg | grep -i blocks
echo "/KBU"
