I formatted with these options. The performance difference has been profound.
# mke2fs \
-E lazy_itable_init=0,lazy_journal_init=0 \
-J size=1024 -L backup -m 1 -t ext4 -v /dev/mapper/backup
I will update with the details when it completes.
