It involves multiple ancient stable kernels, and multiple users, some of whom have a different problem but who find the problem via a web search, and pile on, adding noise to the system. At this point my inclination is to just close this bug is "no intelligent life here, Captain", and if someone wants ask for more help, they can do so elsewhere.
