I don't know, i am not really familiar with vesa stuff, it could be a
solution. I don't know, but i feel that fixing the normal driver would
be easier for me, but maybe this is not always possible.

As for vesa 3.x, i guess they don't do it, because it would not work
with older vesa cards, or something such. I am not really all that
familiar with vesa code.
