Please drop this from your patch, it re-introduces a number of parse
errors that I already fixed in the 2.6 tree.
On another note, I do have some more pvr2fb updates pending, but I'll send

Hi, I've tested this patch (after the radeon patch update), and it's working
almost perfect with just one problem: going back from X the framebuffer
screen is completely distorted, but it can be corrected changing the depth
with fbset (-depth 8/16/32 and back to the working depth).
I have a radeon 9600 (or RV350 AP) and of course the -current- 2.6.x
driver doesn't include this PCI_ID in the code, so it "shouldn't work", but
I've added (from 2.4) the PCI_ID and some code to recognize/setup the
rv350 and the current 2.6.x driver -just- worked, I cannot use fbset to
set resolutions/depths, because it screws up the whole framebuffer. But
going back from X and to X works ok if I don't touch the framebuffer with
fbset. This is with my modified verison of the 2.6.x old driver.
IIRC there was a mail about the binary driver from ATI touching something
hidden in the chip and that I think may be the cause of this "distortion" when
switching from and to X (yes, sometimes X screws up when switching from
framebuffer, but running any GL app corrects everything in X, ej: glxgears).
So the strange thing about this is the old driver working "almost" correctly
with the binary X drivers from ATI and the new driver working flawless in
console but destroying completely the state of the card when switching
to/from X (and of course X using binary ATI drivers).

We need to add a callback to the fbdev when restoring the console
from KD_GRAPHICS to KD_TEXT, maybe a special case of "switch".
James, I suggest turning that into a set_par call with a flag for
'forcing' the mode to be re-applied fully even if it already matches
the HW. (Currently, set_par in some drivers like my new radeonfb,
for obvious perfs reasons, will not touch the HW if the var and the
par are matching already).

You have to make sure the struct fb_info pseudopalette points to the data
in cfb_info. Actually only drivers should allocate the pseudopalette at
boot time if the hardware doesn't support mode change. In the other case
the pseudopalette should be allocated in set_par.

I respectfully disagree. It is not possible to error out of the set_par()
function - for instance, fb_set_var() contains this code:
if (info->fbops->fb_set_par)
info->fbops->fb_set_par(info);
There isn't any error return checking (so why does fb_set_par return an
int when it isn't used? It's fairly misleading.)
This all means that if the allocation of the pseudo_palette in set_par
fails, there's no way to abort the mode change - you _will_ oops in the
other fbcon layers due to a NULL pseudo_palette pointer.
Plus, we're only talking about an array of 16 32-bit words or 64 bytes.
That's hardly worth the extra code complexity to separately dynamically
allocate.

Are we sure that we want this for 2.6? Greg KH has a much less intrusive
patch, maybe you should take that instead and keep my work 2.7.
If you decide to go with framebuffer_alloc then I have more patches for
you ;)

Sorry it has been awhile. I have anew patch against 2.6.7 for peoepl to
try out. Its big because it has alot of driver updates. It has a newer
Mach64 driver. Note it has atyfb_base.c.new file. These changes I wanted
to test but my old laptop died. No more Mach64 card to test with :-(
It has the cirrusfb driver update. Also the Epson1355 driver has been
updated as well. Kryo, SGI Visual Workstation, 3Dfx, and VGA16fb driver
has ben port to use framebuffer_alloc/release. I have updates to the
rivafb driver to support more cards. I merged in more changes from Tony.
Thanks Tony. The neomagic also has some more acceleration fixes.
