You seem to have built both the old and new radeonfb's ... can you
remove the old one ?

Ben.

Ug. You have to many video drivers enabled. For one you both radeons
enabled, there is a older driver, and VESA and vga16fb. You need to select
one driver only. They all conflict when they try to access the hardware.

Plus a whole bunch of other drivers. BTW would you consider it time to
kill off the old radeon fbdev driver?

Last time I checked the new radeonfb driver could not set modes on an
analog LCD panel. Something is mess up in how it computes the closest
mode to what you ask for. If the mode isn't an exact match it won't
set the mode. Old driver does not have this problem.

The driver in 2.4.27 (obviously the old one) sets the the mode correct,
either analog or digital (DVI). The driver in 2.6.8 set the mode, at
least fbset returns the correct information, but the actual used mode is
still 640x480.

Could you set CONFIG_FB_RADEON_DEBUG and post the results to this list and
CC ben?

I've sent him detailed debug info a couple of times. It happens on all
my analog LCD panels, I have four different ones. Next time I'm
playing around with radeonfb I'll try and debug it.

Otto is correct about the behavior, it the match is perfect the mode
will be set. If the match is not perfect you get 640x480 no matter
what the input. DVI panels don't have this problem.

Could anyone move the newest sources of the radeonfb to the CVS of
linux-fbdev, set up the kbuild makefile (see threat
"http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=5626720&forum_id=2357")
and maintain it? Just tell me your sourceforge.net account and I give
you access rights. Look at the ??? driver as Toni had done it (see "http://cvs.sf.net/viewcvs.py/linux-fbdev/FBdev/drivers/i810fb/Readme?view=markup").

BTW any framebuffer driver maintainer can do it if he wants.

Feb 12 15:55:56 pldworkstation PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
Feb 12 15:55:56 pldworkstation ** PCI interrupts are no longer routed automatically. If this
Feb 12 15:55:56 pldworkstation ** causes a device to stop working, it is probably because the
Feb 12 15:55:56 pldworkstation ** driver failed to call pci_enable_device(). As a temporary
Feb 12 15:55:56 pldworkstation ** workaround, the "pci=routeirq" argument restores the old
Feb 12 15:55:56 pldworkstation ** behavior. If this argument makes the device work again,
Feb 12 15:55:56 pldworkstation ** please email the output of "lspci" to bjorn.helgaas@hp.com
Feb 12 15:55:56 pldworkstation ** so I can fix the driver.

The oops happened somewhere inside fbsplash. Can you send an oops with
vanilla kernel?

Disassambling the code:
  2a:   ac                        lods   %ds:(%esi),%al

This decode from eip onwards should be reliable

   0:   aa                        stos   %al,%es:(%edi)   <=====
   1:   84 c0                     test   %al,%al

So this is a strcpy:

static inline char * strcpy(char * dest,const char *src)
{
int d0, d1, d2;
__asm__ __volatile__(
        "1:\tlodsb\n\t"
        "stosb\n\t"
        "testb %%al,%%al\n\t"
        "jne 1b"
        : "=&S" (d0), "=&D" (d1), "=&a" (d2)
        :"0" (src),"1" (dest) : "memory");
return dest;
}

It looks like this (in fbsplash_init):

                vc->vc_splash.theme = kmalloc((strlen(fbsplash_theme)+1) * sizeof(char), GFP_KERNEL);
                strcpy(vc->vc_splash.theme, fbsplash_theme);

IMHO kmalloc failed and strcpy used the NULL pointer. Try to change the
code in this way:

vc->vc_splash.theme = kmalloc((strlen(fbsplash_theme)+1), GFP_KERNEL);
if (!vc->vc_splash.theme) {
        misc_deregister(&splash_dev);
        printk(KERN_ERR "fbsplash_init: ZOMG!!! Out of mem!\n");
        return -ENOMEM;
}
strcpy(vc->vc_splash.theme, fbsplash_theme);

You're right.

btw).

Bellows fix (from Spock) should help for kmalloc.
I'll test it tomorrow...
