The console is correctly set to 128x30, however the timings are apparently not passed from the BIOS to the console driver. From this point on the screen becomes unreadable and unusable: white blooms from the edges and spreads inward. I'll try it out with the 2.6.16 kernel tomorrow... Thanks for your help!
