That works, though I had been expecting something more like:
if (mo->fsname)
ret = asprintf(&source, "%s", mo->fsname);
else if (mo->subtype)
ret = asprintf(&source, "%s", mo->subtype);
else
ret = asprintf(&source, "%s", devname);
return ret ? NULL : source;
