Hi all,

I am new to this list, so please forgive me if I am going over covered ground.

We are evaluating porting our products currently running on Unixware 7.1.1 over to Linux. The main issue that we see is converting our existing installed customer base in a highly available, non disruptive way (as much as possible), particularly existing vxfs filesystems.

Is there vxfs support for Linux? What are possible options here to either read/write the existing 100GB vxfs filesystem or convert it to a native Linux ext or resiser filesystem?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanks and regards,

-Deepak

fs/Kconfig:

config VXFS_FS
tristate "FreeVxFS file system support (VERITAS VxFS(TM) compatible)"
        help
FreeVxFS is a file system driver that support the VERITAS VxFS(TM)
file system format. VERITAS VxFS(TM) is the standard file system
of SCO UnixWare (and possibly others) and optionally available
for Sunsoft Solaris, HP-UX and many other operating systems.
Currently only readonly access is supported.

I guess I wasn't very clear (my apologies), I meant vxfs read/write support. We have been looking at Freevxfs 0.2 as a possibility and I take it version 0.2 is as good as it gets for now?

Unless you want to pay me (or someone else) to implement additional features
you'll have to use what's there, yes.

Veritas is apparently working on a port of their FS to Linux.
I don't know if the Linux version will be compatible with Unixware
though, but it might be. Perhaps talk to them?

If you just want to read some data using freevxfs is probably
the much cheaper and more free and simpler alternative.

vxfs (and practically all other VERITAS products) has been successfully
ported to Linux many years ago, at least it was already stable and working
when I joined VERITAS in 2000.

Yes, I agree with Andi that Deepak should contact VERITAS sales
(www.veritas.com) and investigate what shape and form he wants vxfs for
Linux in, i.e. in what bundle etc. And then explore if it is cheaper to
buy an officially supported fully featured product or to sponsor Christoph
to enhance freevxfs (but not to the point of being useful and safe, of
course, because that is impossible given the fact that vxfs is extremely
complicated and it is impossible to make freevxfs fully featured without
referring to the proprietary source code).

Kind regards
Tigran
