[resend w/o html, apologies]

Hi pinctrl_cherryview maintainers.

I unsuspectingly bought a laptop for a family member which hits
trouble with pinctrl_cherryview; it only boots with the module
blacklisted or acpi=off .

System is (trying) to run Fedora 23 -- made more difficult by recent
Fedora kernels having the module built-in.

Are there any useful debugging steps I can follow to narrow this down?
Already tried the acpi diagnostics steps (acpi=ht, etc) to no avail.

thank you!

I think this is a known issue.

Please disable dw_dmac from your .config (or blacklist the module):

  CONFIG_DW_DMAC_CORE=n
  CONFIG_DW_DMAC=n

You can also enable pinctrl-cherryview.c.

Andy (Cc'd) is working a fix for this DMA hang issue.

Thanks for the suggestion. Did not complete boot however, got a
slightly different call trace, but still no go. As that trace crossed
_prepare_cpus I tried adding nosmp, but we still crash in
acpi_init->acpi_scan_init->acpi_bus_scan->acpi_bus_attach

Any other suggestion? lspci normal and verbose follow...

Do you have anything special on the kernel command line? You should not
do anything else than disable DW_DMAC. That is enough to prevent the
DMA hang if that's the issue.

Are you able to get dmesg of the crash?

Also I can see that the LPSS devices are in PCI mode for some reason.
BTW, what laptop this is?

The issue Mika pointed out is described in the kernel bugzilla:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101271

However it might be not the same issue.

This is a cheap consumer laptop I thought I'd get Fedora on in half an
hour -- grand plans ;-) -- I don't have it rigged to capture dmsg of
the crash, no serial adapter with me.

On the kernel command line... lvm, root settings 'single`.

This is an Acer Aspire One 11 Cloudbook Series AO1-131-C1G9 Model N15V1 .

Can you also disable sdhci:

CONFIG_MMC_SDHCI=n
CONFIG_MMC_SDHCI_PCI=n
CONFIG_MMC_SDHCI_ACPI=n

and see if that changes anything.

If not, please blacklist pinctrl-cherryview.c and send me full dmesg of
the boot and acpidump if possible.

Thanks, I'll try if I can purchase similar machine here and debug it
further.

I blacklisted those, and the call trace changed and shortened, but
we're still panicking.

setup_IO_APIC
clear_IO_APIC
apic_bsp_setup
native_mp_prepare_cpus

Working on that...

it's an alright device for a nephew who wants to start coding in
python. If you get it to boot, that is :-)

cheers,

If you able to recompile kernel, please do instead

adding intel_lpss,intel_lpss_acpi,intel_lpss_pci to blacklisted
modules in kernel command line did not change things for the better.

Compiles are slow and awkward on the limited setup I have (visiting
relatives, etc)... I'm trying to get a 4.6.6 kernel built with
pinctrl_cherryview as module so I can test that case...

All tests so far on Fedora's kernel-4.6.6-300-fc23 rpm, frobbing kernel params.

ok so I've tried blacklisting all the modules suggested here, but they
do not make a difference. What does make a difference is to have
pinctrl_cherryview (as a module and ) blacklisted, _and_ noapic.

dmesg
http://fpaste.org/343894/78237145/

acpidump
http://fpaste.org/343898/14586785/

big thanks for all the help so far,

martin

Does it work if you have only pictrl-cherryview blacklisted? E.g no
noapic?

You can also disable the HS-UART as it tries to divide by zero:

CONFIG_SERIAL_8250_DW=n

intel_lpss_* is actually different thing than setting

CONFIG_X86_INTEL_LPSS=n

which I suggest you try as well (you can't blacklist that).

Does not work. To complete boot, I met have noapic and
pinctrl_cherryview blacklisted.

Heh, dividing by zero is always a good try.

Good catch, ok will give it a shot. Will be tomorrow.

Took a few days but managed to get my hands on the laptop again.

A kernel built with CONFIG_X86_INTEL_LPSS=n boots with noapic in the
cmdline. Somehow during the build all the PINCTRL options in the
kernel got switched off, perhaps they depend on X86_INTEL_LPSS?

If I don't add noapic, we crash during boot.

I'm about to lose access to this laptop as I am traveling back home,
leaving it with its new owner...

cheers,

martin

That's correct.

Okay, so there is something wrong with either IO-APIC or the pinctrl on
this particular machine.

We will try to get one such machine here to debug the issue further.
Thanks.

It's unrelated.

To follow up on this now. I finally got almost similar laptop. This is
Acer Aspire One Cloudbook 11 A01-131-C39W.

I've tried v4.6-rc1 on that and it works just fine (dmesg is attached).
I have pinctrl and IO-APIC enabled among other things.

I checked from Windows side that it uses ACPI to enumerate most devices
and that is what Linux is also doing. In your case lspci output showed
LPSS I2C and DMA controllers that are not supposed to be there if ACPI
is used to enumerate them. I've seen once that the BIOS had bug where it
exposed same devices in both modes at the same time. This obviosly
causes problems.

There might be a BIOS upgrade for that particular laptop that fixes the
issue.
