PARPORT 9k6 modem & kernel 2.4.18

I can confirm James's story.

After upgrading from kernel 2.4.8 (Mdk 8.1) to 2.4.18 (Mdk 8.2), my
parport 9k6 BayCom modem no longer works.

All modules load as they should, without complaints:

..but doesn't pass any traffic. No RX, no TX. I am using the same ax25-up
script I used with the 2.4.8 kernel.

Any pointers on how to fix this are most welcome...I am stumped.
I am considering patching up to the most current kernel to get Jeroen's
sock_orphan() fix, although it probably won't solve this problem.

If you use 2.4.19-pre7, does the problem go away?  There were some
parport fixes after 2.4.18 I think.

This modem works in 2.4.18-pre1, and stops working in 2.4.18-pre2 and 
thereafter.

If you are a PICPAR modem user, the most recent kernel that will work 
for you is 2.4.18-pre1

The sources for this can be be built by applying patch-2.4.18-pre1.bz2 
against kernel 2.4.17

Ham populated IRC Linux channel?

I'm having 'fun' setting up Redhat (my first attempt at Linux). Is there a
ham populated IRC server/channel that I'll be able to get genuine help from
fellow hams?

Well there is #hamradio on the EFNet IRC network (www.efnet.org for IRC 
servers), and there is now also a #hamradio
on OpenProjects net (www.openprojects.org for servers).

I started the #hamradio channel on OpenProjects about a year ago.
Look for LinuxKnight. :)

Both of those are good. 

There's also #CQDX on irc.worldirc.org. Not a particularly chatty place 
a lot of the time, but there's a a large audience and a bot that posts 
packetcluster spots. #AMSAT on duck.informx.com is specifically 
satellite oriented, and a lot of the AO-40 regulars hang out there.

I'd avoid (and do avoid) efnet, it's pretty cruddy in general and often
is a warzone.  I'm on the OPN servers nearly every day and occasionally
drop in to #hamradio.

Just to give a little more detail, what Bob is saying is that the Open 
Projects Network (OPN) website at http://www.openprojects.org will tell 
you that there is an IRC network whose main rotation you can access by 
connecting an IRC client (like Xchat) to the FQDN irc.openprojects.org.

This will connect you a currently available IRC server in the network 
based on workload; which one you get doesn't matter as the same 
channels are carried on all of them, and everybody can chat with 
everybody else no matter which server they're on. Looks like there's 
about 20 servers in the net total.

Dunno about the IRC, but where do you live? There are many
"Linux-hams" in the UK who I am sure will be more than willing to help
out (including me if you live near Chelmsford).
