To all: No WONDER I couldn't hear anybody on 20M - everybody was reading 
their mail!

Thanks for all the recommendations - I am looking at gmfsk but since it 
depends upon FFTW V2 and I have FFTW V3 installed I'm going to have to 
do some hacking to make it work (and of course I shall post my changes 
back to the authors).
