We tried to turn on AX25 in a SuSE 10.0 system yesterday. It was an
educational experience.
Suse no longer directly supports or includes the AX25 packages.
AX25 is indirectly supported as a 'project' by one of the SUSE folk.
That AX25 project is missing one little piece 'libax25.so'
Even if that all worked, it's using kernel 2.6.13 which I believe is
broken for MKISS.
Do anybody have AX25 working on a recent SUSE system? Is there a
cookbook checklist of how to install and get it going?
Is there any Linux distributions today that are AX25 ready without any
futzing around? It appears the system we were working on is going to go
with XP-Pro since it's so much easier to set up and use.
Thanks,
Bill - WA7NWP

What are you trying to do with it? If it is being used a a network device or
BBS, I can not see where XP is any gain, but I guess it it is some sort of
terminal device that the public has access to then I guess it probably would
look better with XP. You need to move to SuSE 10.1 in order to get the
kernel that works correctly I believe. I am moving my machines to 10.1
so as to be able to play with it.
Here in Florida we are working on a Knoppix version that will be quite
near plug and play for setting up our FPAC switches. It will install all
of the AX25 stuff along with the fpac and netrom stuff. There will also
be fbb on there for those who are running a bbs and want that facility.
Here is the latest, it is a 2.4 kernel, Charlie is working on a 2.6 kernel
release, and I think it is almost done. There was I think a script problem
with the fpac install.
------------------------------------------------------------ From
k4gbb -----------------------------------------------
It is available now @ ftp://n4zkf.com./fadca
The file name is FADCA-1.7.4.iso (approx 500Mb)
This will be the last version with the 2.4.27 Kernel.
The next version will be based on Knoppix 10.01, with the 2.6.17 kernel.
The preliminary work has already been done, but not tested.
<<Charlie>>
k4gbb
------------------------------------------------------------ End k4gbb
-------------------------------------------------
Since this has come out he has been working on the script problem
and I believe he is almost done, or maybe done with it. So 2.6 maybe
ready by now.

SuSE 10.0 uses kernel 2.6.13 which has a broken mkiss interface as you
suspect.
I am running 10.1 with AX.25 on three systems including my DXSpider cluster
node just fine. The AX.25 stuff is compiled into the default kernel as
modules. Ham software like the AX.25 utilities is now packaged by others.
libax25.so is on the ftp installation sources or you can use my repackaging
of the 10.0 stuff with libax25.so included at ftp://ftp.w1nr.net/suse-ham/.
SuSE seems to have decided to go with no more than 5 CD's, therefore there
are many packages left off the CD's but are available via ftp.
You basically add ftp installation sources with YaST to point to the ham
packages and an "inst-source" and "non-oss-inst-source" off a mirror and
everything will be available to you.

I have been using Mandriva Linux (formerly Mandrake) for a long time and
recently shifted to 2.6 kernel for my AX25 packet radio.
Mandriva distro include all AX25 drivers and kernels are compiled with
AX25 option set by default.
2006 official distro has 2.6.12 kernel that is not perfect for AX25.
It can be updated with a more recent kernel like 2.6.17.1 easy to
install as there is a rpm file available.
I am presently using Mandriva 2006 official and kernel 2.6.16.18 on my
AX25 BBS/Rose-FPAC/DxNet station.
However, there is a 2007 distro to be released in october that is based
on kernel 2.6.17 witch includes a number of recent AX25 patchs by Ralf
DL5RB. The beta 1 version is available for free download on CDs or one
4,7Gb DVD.
Mandriva has its own live distro on a CD, called Mandriva One. It is in
beta 1 step of development with 2.6.17 kernel. This live version could
be used for AX25 as it can be easily installed on HD. Although it does
not include development software (gcc compiler) it may be interesting to
experiment with for AX25 installing AX25 libraries and utilities from
binary executable files. See my ROSE-FPAC Mini Howto.

Thanks everybody for the comments on SuSE and AX25. It looks like it's
possible but not as easy as using Ubuntu or similar Debian distribution.

Not I. Perhaps because of this:
<http://www.bbspot.com/News/2000/4/linux_distros.html>
But seriously, I hope someone answers your question in the
affirmative w.r.t. colinux.

Hi,
Though I haven't been trying to use colinux on amateure radio,
I can say there are many difficulties to work them out.
An effort to develop the virtual serial device seems to have
gone away.
There is no way to get out/into except the virtual network device,
at this stage.
However, as you may notice, colinux is still under development.
You can build and add some special devices for amateure radio,
if you like.

Aki

Hmm. Without the serial port we don't gain anything we don't already
have. Hmmm. Maybe the free Microsoft Virtual PC will work...
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx
It appears there are some great opportunities here with all the virtual
systems showing up - everything from XEN to JNOS...
