Have you tried just changing your Ethernet card? OpenSuSE, in my experience, is as stable as other distributions. Both Mandriva and Fedora can use the ax25 RPMs. If you aren't hard over on RPMs, ubuntu has a collection of .deb ax25 installation packages. RAID1 booting shouldn't be a problem with any of the distributions.
