I have been considering setting up a AX25 only Linux box here for sometime
now.

My problem here is that I only know enough to get my Linux boxes running and
keep them running satisfactory for what I have done so far over the past eight
years.

Is there a current write up that I can use as a guide to help walk me through
setting up and configuring AX25 other than the man pages? I plan on using
openMEPIS for the OS which is a Debian derivative unless someone suggests
another Debian source other than Ubuntu.

http://www.xastir.org/wiki/HowTo:AX.25

This is Xastir-specific, but will get you set up for AX.25 nonetheless.

Other place to look at, if needed : <http://rose.fpac.free.fr/>
First part of the How-to is about AX25.

Although aimed primarily at fpac, there's some very useful info here
http://rose.fpac.free.fr/MINI-HOWTO/

fpac is node software for Rose, Netrom and Flexnet. The netrom portion
is very close to LinuxNode and shares much of that code.

Bernard uses Mandriva but many fpac users run Debian or a 'buntu
derivative of it. I run vanilla Debian.

Have you looked at the standard HOWTO for AX.25?
http://www.w1nr.net/howto/html/AX25-HOWTO/index.html

I've been actively using ax25 (and compiling kernels for it) since about
1992/3, with kernel 2.0.29.

With the greatest respect to Jeff Trantor and the previous author of the
ax25 howto, Terry Dawson (a fellow vk2), I've always found the official
document to be of limited value. The principal problem is currency of
the document in a changing environment.

The URL below points to a 2001 document. ax25 has come a long way since
then, and so has Linux. 2.6 kernels are a far cry from 2.0 and 2.2 kernels.

Whilst some information is valid, some is not, leaving a newcomer
effectively without help.

The document by Bernard F6BVP, although primarily aimed at fpac,
contains currently maintained ax25 information, contributed by current
active users of ax25 with 2.6 kernels.

I haven't looked at the AX.25 HOWTO since I handed it over to Jeff in
2000. Indeed, I'd pretty much left amateur radio about that time. I'm
getting back into it somewhat again now.

Is packet still popularly used with Linux? Things seem very quiet in
Sydney, hard to find a packet radio signal at all, let alone anyone
using Linux.

Has there been much demand for the HOWTO? If there has I might consider
updating it again.

Terry

Terry,

Nice to see you back on deck.

The packet network has greatly diminished in size over the last ten
years, with many (most) nodes (of all flavours) and bbs's having
disappeared. There was never a lot of Linux users in vk.

However, packet is still surviving in UI mode courtesy of APRS, and
nodes are springing up everywhere. Programs such as xastir, which is
Linux based, are ensuring a future need for ax25 under Linux. With many
operators opting for soundmodem, the need for a howto is still current,
IMHO.

Getting back to packet, there is still a world-wide Netrom network and,
both Rose and Flexnet are in use in small(ish) pockets around the world.
The fpac implementation of Rose for Linux by F6FBB, and now maintained
by Bernard, F6BVP, is really excellent and new nodes are appearing in
the US and Australia, among other places.

I've been using Linux for packet since John Tanner, VK2ZXQ, introduced
me to it (Linux) in 1992/3, and I still use it today because it lets me
do things Windows has never let me do - in AR.

I'm happy to converse privately if you want more local information.
