Hi,

I'm having a bit of trouble to get a soundmodem working.
The problem is that the radio only transmits silence. So PTT works.
I tried with and without a line-level-to-mic-level resistor network, I
also tried that line-level-thingy together with a capacitor to solve the
problem of the couple-of-volts on the mic-pins of the radio, but always
silence. I verified that audio comes out of the soundcard and also out
of the resistors (something like:

Hello Folkert,

While Soundmodem is the old standby software TNC for LInux, there are 
better solutions out there now.  The one I've been recommending with 
significantly better decodes is a new entry called Dire Wolf from WB2OSZ:

If you download the new beta source archive ( 
http://home.comcast.net/~wb2osz/Version%201.0/direwolf-1.0-src.zip ), 
open up the zip, look in the User-Guide and check out Chapter 10.  In 
there, it gives a table of Dire wolf's # of decodes compared to all 
kinds of TNCs including Soundmodem and safe to say, it blows away 
Soundmodem due to it's multiple off frequency decoders, multi-bit error 
correction, etc..  There is also a version for the Raspberry Pi as well!

Back to your original problem, I suspect your issue is in the Linux 
sound system.  Are you using PulseAudio?   Did you run pavucontrol and 
route the audio from Soundmodem to your desired soundcard?

I don't think that is the problem: I connected headphones on the
audio-out connector of the soundcard and did hear the modem-noise. So
encoded data is going out. I'm suspecting something electrical going
wrong. I googled for it and no special precautions were suggested
anywher, only sdchematics for a ptt were to be found.

Regarding dire wolf: I'll give it a try when the audio tx problem has
been solved.

Sounds like a wrong pin connection. Which radio are you using?

Also check for broken cable or connector on radio side.

It certainly sounds like you've proven that it's a radio-electronics
problem and not on the computer side of things.  The radio you're
using...uses a standard ~600ohm mic, or something else?  Have you ever
used that particular radio with another mic, computer, or other thing
that plugs into the mic jack?  I lack experience in that area, but I'm
just wondering if uses some kind of funky mic or odd way of connecting
it (e.g. the mic doesn't go between "mic" and "gnd" or something). Maybe
measure the native mic's output to make sure it's where-and-what you
expect, or double-check a tech manual for the rig?

The radio is a CB radio (do not have my license yet), a DNT Formel 1
(Formule 1).

If tried both a very loud and a very almost silent volume, nothing to
be heard on the receiver. The receiver is located 15 meters away, behind
a couple of floors. An couple of other radio/modem combinations work
fine and can be hear on that other radio.

I'm also a bit more of a software guy than a hardware guy (trying to
adapt that).

I'll do some measuring next saturday to be sure.

Unfortunately the microphone got destroyed (and thrown away) during
adaption to the modem-connector-print.

So, just to double-check what you've done, here's what I see as pin
assignments:

1 GND
2 (not shown)
3 PTT-Tx (Ground it to transmit)
4 MIC audio in (always on, other wire to Ground)
5 PTT-Rx (Ground it to receive)
6 GND (not used in original mic)

The PTT button is working as a SPDT switch.  I don't know how you're
switching, and I didn't look closely at the schematic, but you may not
want RX & TX grounded at the same time; if you're keeping RX on
full-time and doing a SPST switch on TX, you might try disconnecting the
RX to see if your TX audio comes in.

Tried that this night (disconnecting rx) but still silence.

Hmmm, let me see if it helps if I short rx when sending.

Sounds like you need to switch you radio to the correct mode.

I am guessing it is a Yaesu and you have it set for Packet/data which 
wants to use the data jack on the back.

Try switching it to a standard mode and use the mic jack or use the data 
jack for the data modes.

You need to install libxml-1.8.17-i386-2.tgz which you can find in the 
/pasture directory on the CDROM.

First of all. Are you using kernel soundmodem, or userspace soundmodem?
With userspace soundmodem you do not need soundmodem modules.

This is a known problem. This package is missing in Slackware
9.1. Get if from Slackware 8.1 cd or mirror, install it, and
that's it.

Anyway, I've seen some problems with the soundmodem package built in
Slack 9.1. If you have some problems, try compiling it yourself, or I
can send you a binary file that works fine (at least for me).

It sounds like he is trying to use the soundmodem modules.  I believe 
that it is necessary to remove the audio sound modules when doing this 
in order to avoid a conflict.

Usermode soundmodem is probably preferable in any case.

Something wrong with the ALSA config. You said that playing music
works but maybe the OSS emulation layer is not working properly.
Your music player might be using ALSA directly. gMFSK uses the
OSS sound API and thus needs the ALSA OSS emulation layer to
work.

Hmm.. I guess this is from the threading libs, I don't think
gMFSK has this error message. :)

Anyway it's probably a result from the audio not working and
as such not serious (?)

Soundmodem

Hello all. I am tying to get Thomas's userspace soundmodem working on an
IBM laptop. I have installed SuSE 7.3 and Kernel 2.4.8. AX25 is working
fine with baycom drivers. I have installed soundmodem from SuSE's rpm's.
Got it configured OK and soundmodem starts with no errors. If I check
ifconfig, it shows port ax0 up running. Next, using "call" I tried
"calling" a station, expecting to hear a packet from the internal speaker
(I haven't hooked up a radio yet). Nothing is heard. After stopping "call"
with Ctrl-C, I checked ifconfig again and see only 1 packet transmitted
(should be at least 2 I think). I am using alsa sound drivers and sound
card (ESS1688) works fine to play wav files, etc. 

Any suggestions??
