If you don't know about a 0.58 release of udev I am guessing that it is redhat's version. I just updated my fedora core 4 to the development version of glibc and udev (0.69) and the /etc/udev/makedev.d/50-udev-nodes file is still there. So in short udev CAN dynamically create the lp and parport nodes. Is that correct?
