It's cause the driver of your camera does not create a link in sysfs to
the physical device behind the videodevice. This is needed for modern
hardware integration or udev's BUS= matches.
How does "ls -l /sys/class/video4linux/video0" look like?
What's the name of the module? Is it in the stock kernel?
Kay

The name of the module is quickcam and it is not in the stock kernel.
I compiled it from source.

You may bug the author of the driver to pass the physical device to the
driver core to get the links automatically created at the videodevice
registration.
As an example, for my ov511 usb-webcam it looks like this:
[kay@pim ~]$ tree /sys/class/video4linux/video0/
/sys/class/video4linux/video0/
|-- bridge
|-- brightness
|-- contrast
|-- custom_id
|-- dev
|-- device -> ../../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.1/usb3/3-1
|-- driver -> ../../../bus/usb/drivers/usb
|-- exposure
|-- hue
|-- model
|-- name
|-- saturation
`-- sensor
Good luck,
Kay
