I'm running a debian testing/unstable mix based on a de-mepis'd mepis
with udev 0.050.
I have a "built-in" medion combined SD/MMS/SmartMedia/Compact-Flash
device that is not properly recognized. The module is usb based and has
4 slots, and under windows a flash device can be read in each slot at
the same time.
Before I installed udev (as a consequence of gnome-volume manager) this
worked fine as various /dev/sd?? nodes, but with udev I had various
problems.
The first problem was that every second a raft of errors regarding
reading the partition table on /dev/ub/a (or /dev/uba as it actually
was), and this error was written every second to the console and could
not be silenced even by inserting a card into one of the slots.
I added this rule:
BUS="usb", SYSFS{product}="Medion Flash XL V3.0A*",
NAME{all_partitions}="usbhd"
which stopped the repeated console errors after the first time and
created the set of /dev/ushhd?? numbered device nodes, but as the usb
device is actually 4 removable drives I think it should be making 4 main
block devices not just one.
I'm not sure if udev or hotplug is at fault here but I'd like to report
it properly and help solve the problem.
Sam

The ub driver does not support multi-LUN devices, use usb-storage
instead for access to all slots of your reader.

Thanks for another very quick answer Kay. (I saw the answer appear
during the pantomime interval using my trusty P900)
I realise you are right and that UB does not support all that
usb-storage did, I'm pleased to find that udev works with usb-storage too.
I'm happy to look further but beg you point me in the right direction. I
had earlier removed the ub.ko kernal module so it couldn't be loaded, is
this the right thing to do to cause usb-storage to be used instead?
I don't find any clues in /etc/hotplug/usb

Selecting the UB driver for compilation actually reduces functionality in
usb-storage, regardless of which modules are actually loaded.
You need to set CONFIG_BLK_DEV_UB to 'n'.

As Matt pointed out, you need to disable it. In
drivers/usb/storage/usb.c you find stuff like that:
#if !defined(CONFIG_BLK_DEV_UB) && !defined(CONFIG_BLK_DEV_UB_MODULE)
{ USB_INTERFACE_INFO(USB_CLASS_MASS_STORAGE, US_SC_SCSI, US_PR_BULK) },
#endif
> I don't find any clues in /etc/hotplug/usb
Look at:
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules.usbmap
That is generated by depmod and read from /etc/hotplug/usb.agent.

Thanks for the tip.
I did read later this afternoon about kernel packagers being overzealous
in enabling UB support. From what I read ub will not be extended for
devices it fails to properly support too.
I shall fiddle with modules.usbmap as per Kay's hint (if it was) to see
if that gives any joy, if not I shall rebuild my kernel from source
andmake the recommended suggestion.
Thankyou both for you.
