We here at Ubuntu Towers have turfed up an interesting problem in the
last couple of days, there's still a large bunch of consumer USB devices
such as scanners and "libgphoto2" cameras that don't work with the
uevent system.
Instead if seems that to communicate these devices you need to use
libusb, which uses a file under /proc/bus/usb/devices/NNN/NNN -- rather
than any sensible node under /dev.
The lack of any node under /dev also seems to mean that there isn't any
sysfs support for these devices.
What's the long-term plan for things like this?

/dev/bus/usb/devices/NNN/NNN, the udev rules are already in the Debian
package.
IIRC the kernel code needed to support this was supposed to be merged
soon.

don't use usbdevfs:
http://www.kernel.org/git/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;hûf82fd2e1f4e679c60516d772d1862c941ca845
libusb needs a patch, which is on this list.

Ah, excellent -- it's just our fault for lagging and having silly freeze
dates. We'll be able to pick this up in a few weeks when we open dapper
development.
