Hello,
Is there any reason for not generating and using hotplug events for things
like CD-ROM drive trays opening/closing? There's probably other examples of
events like this, that are not technically a hotplug event, but it would be
useful if they were handled as such. For example, when someone puts a CD in,
a script checks what type of CD it is. If it's audio, a program to play
audio CD's starts up. If it's data, the CD is mounted -- maybe even making
the mount point be based on the volume name (that's probably a dumb idea, but
it should be possible.) Desktop OS's like KDE could then also add icons for
the device on the desktop.
I think this would overall increase how automatic GNU/Linux systems are --
right now, these types of things can be created, but it requires knowledge of
the kernel, drivers, and filesystems. End-users don't want to have to do
this. I guess this functionality may be more in the domain of distribution
creators; what do you think? Oh, btw, I'm new to this list and I thought I'd
check the archives to see if this question's already been asked, but they
seem to be broken, so sorry if this topic has already been discussed.

Yes, there is. The kernel doesn't learn about such events, as devices don't
report them.

gmane.org has the whole archive of this mailing list, back to when it
was created (was built from my local archive), as well as providing a
news feed of the list.
I also think marc.theaimsgroup.org has a searchable archive.
I gave up on the sf.net archive a long time ago...
thanks,
