Did you take a look at the README that details how to add this to a Red
Hat distro?
What distro are you using?

No I hadn't read that, but I just did (assuming rh_udev_for_dev.txt) is
it; I didn't see anything that applied, I already figured out those little
quirks when I had the paths set wrong in the config file- none of those
seem to be the problem-
the system hands when it tries to start udevstart on boot, if i do it
manually it seems to work ok. Anyways, to answer you question- I am
running slackware 9.0 w/ a 2.6.6 kernel and glibc 2.3.2.

Hm, I don't know of anyone who has got this to work on Slackware, you
might try on one of their mailing lists...
But as to why udevstart doesn't work, did you build it with klibc or
glibc? If glibc, can you actually get to the libraries needed that
early in the boot process? Try using the klibc version and see if that
helps or not.
If not, can you enable full debug logging and let us know what the
syslog says?
thanks,
greg k-h

very good point; sleep deprivation affects million of americans, i wonder
how many false bug reports are also caused by it.

that was the problem, I had actually forgotten that I used glibc on it-
and when I tried to rebuild it with USE_KLIBC=true, I remembered why.
Is udev-025 the latest stable release? It has an older version of klibc
packed with it, and after digging through some of the klibc mailing list
archives, i saw a patch from you that talked about some failed #include's
in newer kernels, so I grabbed the latest release from kernel.org, test
compiled it, then switched it out with the klibc directory in udev-025/,
poof compile worked fine, and so did boot up [although with DEBUG=true, it
provides *ALOT* of debug info, more than ive ever seen ;]), anyways to be
along to my point. You have a sucessfull boot time use of udev on
slackware.

Yeah, glad to hear it works for you!
Yes, 025 is the latest version, and the version of klibc in the udev
tarball builds properly and works for me with a 2.6.6-bk5 kernel.
But I'll go resync up to the latest version of klibc just to be safe and
release a new version of udev.
thanks,
