i abuse DESTDIR for this purpose ...
`make install DESTDIR=$HOME/tmp/`
then i can rip out the files that i'll never use ... pretty sure the udev 
install supports this but dont quote me on it ;)

at any rate, i think we all agree that a nice little website with an 
about/howto {install,use} would be good ... just no one seems to want to 
write said website ...
