Hi, I have two external firewire harddisks... each of them has one ext3
partition and one vfat partition. They usually work very nicely.
However, over the past few days, a few times already, all of a sudden
the disks become read-only. The only way to make them writeable again
seems to be to reboot. I checked in my syslog, and I found a bunch of
errors, like:

------

progress - rejecting command
Oct 25 19:29:45 Spectacular kernel: SCSI error : <1 0 1 0> return code 0x20000Oct 25 19:29:45 Spectacular kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev

Can you please help me to fix this problem? I use debian-sid, by the
way. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

My guess is that the problem is here. See the man page for mount(8).

For the ext3 partition you probably want to provide the "errors=continue"
mount option which will cause the kernel to ignore the error and continue in
r/w mode, however the ingetrity of your data is obviously at risk if you do
this. The default behavior is set in the superblock and can be changed on
an unmounted drive using tune2fs. It's probably set to "errors=remount-ro"
behavior if it's not explicitly set already in your /etc/fstab.

If this is happening on the vfat partition too, I'm not sure what the
options are there.
