Can't use readlink, as it's reading something that no longer exists
on remove.

Actually, is anyone using that mechanism other than Steve?

If not, I'd rather just remove it.  It makes problems with
OpenEmbedded builds, and in other places where "readlink -f"
isn't necessarily available.
