Interesting. It strikes me that the original BASH script development
was done for kernels that don't configure every single PCI and USB
driver ... and those bootcharts suggest that when all those drivers
get configured, as for a mainstream distro like Debian, speed then
becomes a much more visible issue.
Using BASH was a way to get things started (the initial scripts were
just a few dozen emailable lines of code), and ensure that sysadmins
could extend hotplugging using traditional tools (or of course just
replacing the program entirely). It's not exactly the best language
for programming with non-trivial datasets.
