My laptop is constantly hanging and I see this in the /var/log/messages:

My system is Toshiba Portege 2000 with Gentoo Linux, output from uname -a:

i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) III Mobile CPU 750MHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
Please just let me know what else you need, wasn't quite sure what

See this for the the dependencies of udev and the kernel:

Newer kernels may not work with old udev versions and newer udev
versions may not work correctly with older kernels.
