Hi, are you guys aware of hotplug-perl?
http://opensource.idealcorp.com/hotplug-perl/ This seems like a very
promising improvement on the original hotplug and promises a significant
speed enhancement. Would anyone consider including it as part of Udev?
Is this even possible?

GJ

This is no longer needed. The whole "hotplug" package is almost dead, as nobody
needs to parse *.map files these days to load a module. The kernel exports
the MODALIAS string in sysfs and the event environment, which can be
natively handled by modprobe. No need for _any_ magic script.
The remaining part of the "hotplug" package is mostly converted to udev
rules. We are currently working on getting rid of the coldplug *.rc scripts
as well.

This map feature is still appreciated to detect PTP cameras and
scanners for example. Module loading isn't required for these devices,
but a script may have to be run to alert desktop applications.

So what? Look at the debian package for e.g. libsane, eciadsl or
libgphoto. There is a script which generates a rules file with the RUN
rules needed for all devices supported.
There is no reason at all to use maps.

I did the same for Mandriva, see
http://cvs.mandriva.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/SPECS/udev/udev_import_usermap?rev=1.5&content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup

No, but we should provide a tool to convert maps in the udev package.
The script you use in Debian is quite similar to mine, but it's
duplicated among all your packages.

No, we should tell upstream maintainers that it's about time they fix
their packages to properly support udev.

Because they are different packages with different needs and providing
the data about the devices they support in different formats...

This does not prevent the udev team to provide a tool to help upstream
maintainers.

It's not much work to provide a generic tool that handles that.
I think it's really worth the maintainance cost needed to port other
packages.

That is what HAL is used for today. You really want to do more than
running a "notification program". HAL has all the data for scanners
and cameras available along with all the other device properties,
userspace is interested in.
