Hello,

I've wanted to switch my Gentoo system over to udev for quite a while, but
haven't yet because of one thing: my hard drive LED stays on constantly (though
there appears to be no actual activity). I created this thread:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-402685.html

on the Gentoo forums, but no one's figured it out yet, so it was suggested that
I post to this list. And here it is. Anyone here care to take a shot at this?
See that forum thread for more info. Thanks.

So if you use a static /dev, the light goes off, with the exact same
kernel version that if you use udev, it goes on?

What kernel version?

thanks,

Yep.

2.6.12-r10, which I believe is the last one to offer a devfs/udev choice.

That's now what I said above, I'm not interested in devfs vs. udev
comparison here (devfs did all sorts of different things that I don't
want to dig into), I'm curious about a "static /dev tree" vs. udev.

Can you test that on a 2.6.15 kernel?

thanks,

greg k-h

Oh, right right, sorry read too fast. Sure, I'll probably get a chance to
test that later today.

Ok, tried a static /dev with 2.6.15, and in fact the light does stay on.

Great, it's not a udev issue then. Thanks for letting us know.
