Hi,

till a couple of days my debian machine was running my own compiled
2.6.10-nitro2 kernel. When I tried to upgrade the machine everything
booted fine, except for the fact that my extra PCI IDE controller
(PDC20268 chipset, using the PDC202XX_new driver in the kernel) gave
problems. I got all kinds of DMA errors and IDE channel resets after which
my machine completely locked up.

Small snippet of the errors I got:
hdg: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveRead SeekComplete Error}
hdg: dma_intr: error=0x10 {SectorIdNotFound }, LBAsect= ... (rest of this
I could not see anymore on the foto I took of the screen)
ide: failed opcode was: unknown

This error repeats a couple of times, then I get the message:
hdg: DMA disabled
PDC202XX: Secondary channel reset.
ide3: reset: success
hdg: task_in_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete ...
hdg: task_in_intr: error=0x10 {SectorIdNotFound }, LBAsect ...

With any new kernel above at least 2.6.10 (I am not sure about 2.6.11, but
definitively sure about 2.6.12) I tried, I always got these messages. The
reason I am sending this to this mailing list is that as soon as I removed
udev from my system completely I was able to boot up with the new kernel
without a hitch. I found somewhere on the Internet a message from somebody
that deinstalled udev also after running into similar problems with the
PDC202XX to get the system booting up again.

Without udev I am running the new 2.6.17.8 kernel without any problems at
the moment. As soon as I install udev again, I get the same messages as
above.

The version of udev I was using was the standard version that is available
in Debian Unstable, namely: 0.093-1.

Does anybody know what exactly is causing this error and how to solve it
so that I can make use of udev again?

Regards,

Guido Diepen
